Gamification
for Wellness Platform
Senior UX/UI Designer
Healthmine was evolving into an innovative wellness and health platform, providing advice based on years of real user medical records and outcomes.
I worked on product and interface design, leaning hard on a gamification system that would help users stay engaged and motivated.
Challenge
Healthmine’s early product allowed users to collect or redeem rewards earned through their health insurance. It was a very simple, white labeled platform for clients such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, Fidelity and HCSC.
The concept going forward was to create a consumer-facing application that aimed to help users engage with and care about their health. The primary objective was to get users to complete recommended 'health actions' which would in turn lead to better health outcomes.
Healthmine was confident that their recommendations would ultimately yield true benefits in terms of long term health for users that would heed the advice because the system was pulling from years of actual health data and medical records amassed through the ongoing relationships with their health insurance clientele.
Having insightful health recommendations ultimately doesn’t mean much if users are not engaged or motivated to heed the advice or actually complete the tasks presented.
Discovery
Early work focused on understanding our users through personas and user journeys.
We knew going in that the scope of the application was going to present a challenge as the range of users it was meant to service was very diverse. We wanted to prioritize and reward prevention as much as we did treatment of existing conditions.
Data from the previous version of the platform showed significant engagement around rewards and results tracking. This was also supported by our competitive analysis and research.
The concept of the ‘Health Score’ was introduced and I designed a system that would communicate with and reward users as they saw their score fluctuate based on their actions and their actual health indicators.
Design
Building on the discovery material, I worked on the information architecture and general flow of the mobile application.
In order to quickly iterate on ideas and interactions, wireframing and creating prototypes of varying fidelity that we could then test for usability was an integral part of the design process.
I also incorporated some of my experience in animation and After Effects to assist in the design of interactions and movement at very early stages in the design. I could start to plan out and create maquettes for more complex interactions and transitions. Having an easy to reference guide early was helpful in the design turnaround as well as in the sizing and planning of work on the side of developers.
We wanted to engage and delight our users, not just through the features and systems in the app but with a very attractive and tactile look and feel.
Solution
I worked on the final visuals and interactions for the mobile version of the platform.
I was particularly satisfied with the improved response we tracked in engagement metrics such as retention and active users. The application's user base steadily grew in concurrence with the addition of clients and engagement numbers were exceptional when compared to what clients were used to seeing from their members prior to our rollout.
One of the main reasons I was asked to join the team was the leveraging of my experience in game design and gamification towards maximizing engagement. I contributed to the design of the 'mechanics' of the app and how it should interact and evolve with users over time while also creating a visually appealing and intuitive interface that was fun and inviting.
